We honored National Aboriginal Day today by learning about and appreciating our school totem pole. The kids learned about the symbolism of each carving on the pole and then went outside to draw the pole and write about it. In the afternoon we spent some more time learning about the purpose and art of totem poles in general. Essentially, the students worked hard today, just like the beaver! We spent our entire morning today building, creating, communicating, designing and problem solving. Students worked in pairs to meet various engineering tasks that they were presented with. The most powerful learning came in the form of each failure and the perseverance required to try again. It was an exciting day for all of us! It hardly seems possible but here we are with just over a week to go before the school year ends. Today we celebrated with the year end concert. A special thanks to Mrs. Emily Pollet, our talented Music teacher, for organizing the entire event!
Despite the dismal weather forecast we had a fantastic day at Gyro beach. The rain held off and we even saw the sun for most of the afternoon. We all had a great day playing, laughing and exploring together!
We started our Monday morning this week by thinking about what makes each of us uniquely special. This was a surprisingly difficult question for many of the kids in our class. We reflected on personal traits and talents then shared our thoughts on sticky notes. Answers were varied including: family relationships, physical pursuits, academic skills, work ethic and character virtues. Gathering to talk about of strengths was a lovely activity for our class and I suspect might be a nice thing to do with your family members as well.
