It was another busy month in our classroom. I can't quite believe October has already come and gone. We all enjoyed Black and Orange day. It's always fun to see so much student spirit on these special days. We also had a great time on our Nature Walk. The weather cooperated with a clear sky, despite the morning rain. The wind was an add bonus for us as we were able to talk about natural sounds versus artificial sounds. When we listened carefully we could hear the leaves rustling in the trees and the sway of the grass as the wind moved it. We could also hear birds and a rooster from a neighbour's yard. The kids are already pointing out changes they see in the natural environment. They noticed there are less leaves on the trees and many more on the ground! We had a lot of fun on Thursday when we visited Mrs. Waldron's classroom polling station to cast our ballots in the Quadra School Federal election. We reviewed the political parties and I tried to simplify each party's platform before we voted. Our class results were as follows:
When our class results were combined with the results of the other participating classes the results were:
We are eager to find out how our results compare to the national results!
Constable Craig visited with us on Wednesday morning to talk about using our WITS. He reminded us that we should use our WITS to help both ourselves, and others, to solve problems peacefully. If we keep making good choices and using our WITS Constable Craig will come back to give us each a WITS badge!
When your child is stuck, have him/her:
1. Say the first sound of the unknown word and reread starting at the beginning of the sentence, then 2. Sound it out / Stretch it out, then 3. Skip the word to finish the sentence and come back to it. Though the time you spend with your child reading the book from school shouldn't take more than 10 minutes, I understand families are busy and there may be nights when you just don’t have time to read, please be sure that the book is returned to school anyway as we will be using it at school on a daily basis. Our first Nature walk of the year was a great success! We walked to Summit park looking for signs of Fall along the way. The focus of the walks is to appreciate nature, observe our surroundings, use our 5 senses, and record changes in the seasons. We also spend a great deal of time talking about pedestrian safety and we are learning to read street signs. When we returned from our walk the students used words and pictures to recall what they saw.
An added bonus for us was all the election signs dotting the neighbourhood. Seeing the signs provided a great opportunity to discuss the upcoming election. Keeping the language simple I introduced the idea that in October, Canadian adults will be voting to elect the new leader of Canada. also took lots of pictures of the Gary Oak meadow which we will use to track and compare changes throughout the coming seasons.
