Today was the perfect day to enjoy a walk up to Summit Park. It was our last official Nature Walk of the school year! We have noticed some significant changes in the natural environment each month and June didn't disappoint us. While we were up there today we sat and listened to the birds call to each other and enjoyed the city views. On the walk back to the school a neighbour invited us to see his newly hatched chickens. It was especially exciting for us when he let each student gently pet the baby chicks. Be sure to visit the Seasonal Changes webpage to view the changes we have captured this year and to see a few more nature shots from today's visit. As you probably already know our school totem pole was unveiled on Friday. It was carved on the school grounds by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Tony Hunt Junior. It was special for all of us to peek into the tent these last three months and see the cedar pole take shape. The raven at the top of the pole symbolizes cleverness and the measurement of knowledge, the beaver in the middle is an industrious, hard working animal, and at the bottom, the face of a child is present to represent all of our students. Today, I took the students outside so we could sit around the pole and write about it. The kids wrote about the animals, the colours and who carved it. We started our week out with a visit from Science Venture! Miranda and Laurel are University students with a passion for teaching children about Science. We spent the entire afternoon learning about Force, Friction and Motion through experiments, stories, songs, and hands-on fun. "Thank you" to the Quadra PAC for sponsoring this great learning opportunity for us! |
